Permits to Purchase a Handgun
To apply for a permit to purchase you must fill out an application and turn it in with a copy of your valid drivers license or state issued ID. If you are a resident alien, you must present your resident alien card.
You must be 21 years of age.
You must be a resident of Franklin County for a minimum of 30 days.
You must NOT have unresolved criminal charges pending, including traffic issues.
You must pick up your permit in person. Applications will be processed and ready to pick up by 3pm the next business day barring any difficulties with the background check. You may call ahead to see if it is approved. If your permit is denied, you will be notified by phone. Please be sure to give us a working phone number.
Permits are $5.00 each. You may purchase up to 5 permits at one time. The permits are valid for 5 years unless the Sheriff goes out of office. You may pay with cash or check. If paying by cash, please bring exact change.
Concealed Handgun Permit
Application packets are available at the Main Sheriff's Office in Louisburg and at the Sub-station in Bunn. The application packet must be submitted at the Main Office only as your paperwork must be notarized and you will need to have your fingerprints and photo taken.
Applicants must:
be twenty-one years of age
be a resident of Franklin County for the previous 30 days
be a citizen of the United States
not suffer from any mental or physical condition which would prevent safe handgun operation
successfully complete a concealed handgun course
There is a fee of $90.00 for the permit which includes a $10.00 fingerprint fee. Renewals are $85.00.
Applicants will present a valid Driver's License or State issued ID at the time of application. The address on the license or ID must be current.
If you have served in the United States Military, you must bring a copy of your DD214 showing your Honorable discharge.
A background check will be run and your application processed. This may take up to 45 days to complete. Once approved, you will receive a phone call to come to the office to receive your permit. You must appear in person with your valid ID to accept your permit.
NOTICE: If you are in a vehicle and are stopped by law enforcement officers, you should put both hands on the steering wheel, announce you are in possession of a concealed hadgun, and state where you have it concealed, and that you are in possession of a permit. Do NOT remove your hands from the wheel until instructed to do so by the officer.
