Emergency Preparedness in Franklin County

The Franklin County Health Department coordinates with local emergency management initiatives to assure readiness for the Franklin County community. Public Health Preparedness and Response is a part of the Division of Public Health that monitors and strengthens, the abilities of our public health and healthcare systems to protect the public in the event of a disaster situation such as disease epidemics, chemical and radiological releases, severe weather and natural disasters.

Franklin County promotes the Special Needs Registry which is maintained by Emergency Management on the county website http://www.franklincountync.us/services/emergency-services

This initiative is an effort to help aid at risk populations during a public health emergency. This registry will assist  partners with communicating and providing educational messages to the identified public. Make a Plan….Build a Kit…..Be Informed. Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Gallon of water per person per day for three days; Non perishable food for at least 3 days with can opener, including pet food
  • Battery Operated or hand crank radio and NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert with extra batteries
  • Flash light and extra batteries,  and matches in a waterproof container
  •  First Aid Kit and whistle to signal for help, and personal hygiene products
  • Dust mask to filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter –in-place
  • Moist wipes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  •  Local maps
  •  Prescription medication and glasses, medicine dropper
  •  Infant formula and diapers
  •  Important family documents in a waterproof container
  •  Change of clothes including long sleeves and sturdy shoes 
  •  Paper and pencil, mess kits, paper cups and plastic utensils
  •  Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
  •  Cash or traveler’s checks and change
  •  Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  •  Fire extinguisher
